Although Cosplay is a past time that is growing more popular each year, very few people attract as much attention from fans and conventions alike as Victoria, the original Cosplay Girl. Able to depict superheroes, cartoon characters, film stars and fables alike, Axiom caught up with the rising star to find out how she turned her hobby in to a career. When and how did you first get started in Cosplay?

I began cosplaying in 2006 after my husband at the time showed me a picture he discovered online of a beautiful young Japanese woman dressed as Rikku from Final Fantasy X-2. Although I had been attending comic book conventions for several years, this was my first exposure to the true art of cosplay. The photo was striking and I was intrigued that someone took the time and dedication to accurately create the costume, hair and accessories. I wanted to try it for myself and selected the character Aerith Gainsborough from Final Fantasy VII.
At what point did you start thinking about approaching Cosplay from a more professional angle?
I’m not sure how to answer that. I’ve always strived for accuracy when it came to my cosplay. I can tell you that I was approached by a photographer at a local Renaissance Faire and he expressed interest in hiring me as a model. During my first professional shoot with him, Supergirl was one of the outfits I brought with me as well as comic book character Calie Liddle. Those were the first two cosplays that were photographed professionally and I have done many characters since then.
How long does it normally take to get ready for an event?
I can get ready pretty fast. I’m at that point where I know exactly how I want my makeup, wigs or hair to look for each costume and have all the clothing and accessories ready. At the recent San Diego Comic Con, I shared a hotel room with the other Slave Leia models. I was sitting on the bed eating a Fruity Pebble cereal bar in my metal bikini while the other girls prepared for the Slave Gathering. My friend and fellow Slave Leia model Anna, joked that I was always the first one ready.
You have depicted many different characters, how do you decide who to be?
It comes pretty easily. I just pick characters that I know and love. I have a very long list. I’m fortunate enough to be in good shape so I have a wide variety of characters to choose from as well.
Do you have any personal favourites?

I’m going to have to say Wonder Woman. The outfit was made by my friend Candy who owns the boutique www.3musesclothing.com and she made my dream come true of becoming the Amazon Princess. I’ve wanted to be Wonder Woman all my life. She is one of earther’s greatest heroes, a comic book legend and I grew up watching the Lynda Carter series.
Which costume got the biggest reaction from your fans?
Oh wow it’s hard to say. Luckily enough all of the costumes I have worn to shows and events were very well received by fans and the press. The ones that are insanely popular to the point where I can barely take two steps without posing for a photos would be Slave Leia, Wonder Woman and Catwoman. Belle was really popular at the San Diego Comic Con as well.
You often depict Japanese characters, have you ever been to Japan?
No, but it is my dream to travel there one day. I love Japanese food and the rich culture.
If you could live a “day in the life of…” anyone which you have dressed up as, who would you choose and why?

That would have to be Lara Croft. I would love to travel, find ancient mystical artifacts and explore the unknown. She leads a very exciting life. Lara has inspired me greatly in my everyday life and I would literally love to be in her shoes for a day!
Are there any characters that you dream about becoming in the future?
American McGee’s Alice is currently stuck in my brain. I am currently playing the video game and love it. I’m obsessed with the idea of cosplaying her. Also Elizabeth from the upcoming game Bioshock Infinite and Rogue from the X-Men.
Although you must have thousands, are there any particularly fond memories in your career that stand out?
I was contacted by an artist by the name of Aaron Locke who told me he had hit a bump in his career after battling depression and has been unable to paint for the last five years. That is, until he came across my photos and my Blog. After reading my words and seeing my Cleopatra images, he suddenly became inspired to pick up a paint brush again and began painting me as Cleopatra. He sent me an in progress photo and I was floored. Not only was it stunningly beautiful but I was speechless that my writing and pictures could inspire someone.
Lastly, what advise would you give to those who are toying with the idea of trying out Cosplay?
Try it but do it for the right reasons. Don’t get into this for self glorification or to gain 15 minutes of fame on the internet. People like that burn out quickly. Do this for yourself and select a character you truly admire. Have fun, experiment and get creative!
