Picaru no Teiri is the predessor of Japan’s SNL whose complete cast also appear on the Japanese version, late-night sketch comedy show. The comedic style and skits are much more experimental than its SNL Japan [ link ] counterpart, similar to that of American sketch comedy show MadTV. Besides a flurry of off the wall acts, current media trending subjects are also incorporated into each skit that have included parodies of Black Swan and Lady Gaga [ link ]. Using international recognized characters has allowed a larger audience to enjoy the series and access modern Japanese comedy. The greater part of the skits poke fun of some of the more ridiculous aspects of Japanese culture and media that are even recognized by Japanese people.
The cast is made completely of new, young comedians and television talent who bring a fresh spin on Japan’s more traditional humor. One of the most unique elements of the show is the concept based around cycling in new talent on the show as a platform for emerging artist. The fresh formula is proving to be successful as ratings continue to grow and the cast gains popularity.
