Adam Pasion has been living and drawing in Japan for the past 5 years. Hailing from San Fransisco, Adam grew up admiring the local zine artists, who would draw, staple and sell their wares at a local zine store located right next to Adam’s school. Which had a very positive impact on his life, as it inspired him to make his own zine…it also had some negative connotations, as the store would lure Adam away from class and saw him skipping school on a regular basis.
Adam soon drew a small, but loyal following with his unique comics, but took a small side step by working at the Computer Game giant, Hudson, who have made games like Bomberman and Bonk. Although a dream job for many, Adam admits that computer games were never really his thing:
“I worked at Hudson, but I didn’t play video games at all, I wasn’t interested in them. You know, as a kid I played Nintendo with my brothers and sisters, but I never bought anything beyond a Super Nintendo.”

Adam moved to Japan with his wife several years ago, and although setting down roots whilst setting up a school may be enough work for most people, Adam chose to keep a comic-diary, which he later released as the Sun Dogs annuals…oh and he had two kids as well during this time! The comics are a day to day explanation of Adam’s experiences in Japan; his love for the country, even its pitfalls, shines through; they are an honest, open and funny view on the expat life in Japan. They appeal to both English speakers living in Japan and those keen to make the big leap and move to this incredible country.
Adam has also maintained an amazing website, BigUglyRobot.net[ link ], which has a huge collection of his work available, both to view online and to buy via his online store. His next big project however is Aftershock, a charity based zine that has secured over twenty artists around the world, who have each donated a short comic strip showing their support for Japan. The artists are extremely varied and offer a different perspective as to how the horrendous events of the Tohoku Earthquake effected them. The book will be available to buy from May, so keep an eye on Adam’s website, or stay tuned to Axiom, as we will let you know the details as soon as we find them out.
